NORWALK, Conn. – A burning couch created a heavy smoke condition Sunday morning in a Norwalk apartment, Norwalk Fire Department Deputy Chief Edward Prescott said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, and the apartment's residents were allowed to stay in their home.

This account comes from Prescott: The fire at 29 Ferris Ave. was reported at 3:26 a.m. Damage was limited to the couch. Fire crews remained on the scene until 4:40 a.m. to ventilate the smoke and monitor for carbon monoxide and other gases in the other five apartments with a common stairwell in building No. 3 of the three-building complex. All of the building's residents were allowed to remain in their apartments.

Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Hansen was investigating the cause.

A few hours earlier, Washington Street was shut down so fire crews could investigate a chimney fire at 117 Washington St. The fire happened at about 10 p.m. Saturday, and the street was closed for 45 minutes while fire crews checked the roof and determined the building was safe.
