An early morning fire gutted the second story of the Old Jail, part of the Mill Hill historic district. According to published reports, the fire started in one of the apartments around 5:30 Sunday morning and spread rapidly. Members of the Norwalk Fire Department had the blaze under control in about an hour, but not before the fire destroyed both apartments.
Leo Esposito, one of the tenants, returned home from work and said he observed smoke coming from the adjacent apartment that was occupied by Dick Wittingham. According to the blog yourCT, the fire began in an air-cleaning unit. Both men escaped without injuries.
The Norwalk Historical Society owns the building that dates back to the early 1800s. After purchasing it about 30 years ago, the Society constructed and rented the apartments to help generate revenue. According to The Hour, the fire did not destroy the historic ground floor though firefighters had to break windows while battling the blaze.
